Farouk Al-Wahab, an expert in African and International Security Affairs and State Protocols, has averred that the rating of Ghana as the second most peaceful country in Africa is not a true reflection of our se4curity situation.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he stated that the barometers and reasons used in rating Ghana are problematic.
He said nobody could convince him that Ghana is more peaceful than any other African country.
He said the body that conducted the survey only focused on the political atmosphere in the country and alone is faulty.
Ghana has ranked the second most peaceful country in Africa in the 2021 Global Peace Index report by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The IEP is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank dedicated to shifting the world’s focus to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress.
The country ranked 38th in the world out of the 163 countries reviewed. Ghana scored 1.715 which represents a two-point move upwards from the previous Global Peace Index report.
But the expert indicates that Ghana cannot be the second most peaceful country in Africa.
The diplomat told the news that in a general sense, ”I am sorry to say that it is not true that Ghana placed second as the most peaceful country in Africa. If they had used all the coordinates, then I can strongly challenge that t5he rating is faulty”.
He said ”if you just pick a corner of the barometer, we have the political and electoral, but the two are not the same. We also have an economic and security barometer. In measuring and assessing how peaceful countries are, you have to first and foremost look at the political outlook or situation. Ghana stands tall when it comes to its political outlook.
The population size is also considered. Ghana is about 30 million or more population. We don’t have one single political prisoner in the country. We have a free flow parliament. Ghanaian parliamentarians move freely and eat together. On that political front, Ghana is okay. We have successfully transferred power under eight parliaments. It does not mean that we do not have electoral challenges, but we have not witnessed there is a big issue like Burkina Faso and others. Yes, we’ve had situations where killings were recorded but on the electoral barometer, Ghana is there.”
Mr. Farouk Al-Wahab added that on economic peace, Ghana’s economy is not the best to warrant our second position.
In terms of security, he said Ghana lacks intelligence and struggling.
He also mentioned unresolved murders, stealing, fraud against foreigners is giving Ghana a bad name to investors.
