The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has proposed a new method in the appointment for Commissioners of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC).
The party wants the EC commissioners to be subjected to parliamentary approval.
To the NDC, EC’s critical requirements include independence, neutrality, credibility, transparency and competence and the perception of these requirements should be above partisan appointments.
The proposal was part of 34 proposals the party has sent to the EC for consideration.
According to the NDC, the current mode of appointment makes the EC appear partisan.
The proposal said: ”Representatives of the people must have a
hand in their appointment. Appointment of Supreme Court Justices with similar critical requirements involve prior parliamentary approval. Chairperson of EC as Returning Officer of [the] presidential election must not be solely appointed by the President who is often a candidate.
The CRC, of which the current EC Chairperson was a member, recommended prior parliamentary approval. Government White Paper on the CRC Report accepted the recommendation of prior parliamentary approval.”
