A criminologist and lecturer Edgar Tachie Akonnor, has admonished the Ghana Police Service to partner with professionals in academia to help them in fighting crime.
He was of the view that the Police must not only focus on resolving and prosecuting criminals but go beyond the criminal prosecution and research into the pattern of crime and develop solutions to reduce crime in the country.
Edgar Tachie Akonnor explained that the Police must collaborate with academic institutions to help them with research into criminal activities.
He said the Police are usually interested in gathering evidence to help with the prosecution, but the academics go beyond that to understand the psychology behind the crime and help prevent these crimes.
The lecturer speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that if we should adopt this approach it would help the service in becoming more efficient.
He stated that and we progress as a country, crime will increase since there are people who are struggling to make ends meet.
”We should understand that our social problems are going to get more. Crime, lawlessness will increase, and so, we have to prepare and deal with them. One of the things we have to do is to go on a preventive move,” he added.
He advised the media to stop castigating the Police Service and encourage them to do their best.
He described the Service as an excellent one that needs more resources and logistics to be more efficient.
”It is not easy to be in that Service. If they err, we have to call their attention, but that should be overstretched. We have to encourage and be proud of their work,” he concluded.
