A decision by the Electoral Commission of the Students’ Representative Council at the Ghana Institute of Journalism to organize this year’s SRC elections online has raised eyebrows.
Several students and candidates have questioned the rationale behind the decision, saying it lacks merit and justification.
Some of the students who spoke to Rainbowradioonline.com that indicated that the school is currently having face-face teaching and learning and has planned for a face-face examination hence, it makes no logical sense for the SRC to organize the elections online.
Per the timetable released by the Electoral Commission, the opening of nomination was done on August 27, 2021, and closed on August 30, 2021.
Vetting of candidates will begin today, Wednesday, September 1, 2021, and end on September 2, 2021.
The Commission will release the results for the vetting on Saturday, September 4, 2021.
Ban lifting on campaign activities will take place on September 5, 2021, whereas the presidential debate has been slated for September 6, 2021.
The election is slated for Wednesday, September 8, 2021.
But some students have raised questions over the online elections saying it would not be prudent to do that.
According to them, even at the peak of the Covid-19 outbreak, the nation with over 15 million registered voters held the national elections without any problem.
In an engagement on social media, the current SRC President Nii Lante questioned a student why he would demand that the elections be held face-face because the exams were being held face-face.
”So because we have face to face examination, the General election should also be face to face, is that your argument,” he quizzed.
Meanwhile, SRC presidential hopefuls are expected to file at a cost Ghc900.
All other candidates will file their nominations at a cost of Ghc700.
