Political Activist Emmanuel Abankwah Kesse, known by many as Olumanba, has asked the media to stop granting the opportunity to members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI+) to speak.
He is claiming that granting them such opportunities would only make them advocate for their rights and promote their activities.
To him, the media must represent the voice of the majority who are against such activities because it remains evil and dangerous to the nation and its cultural values.
He asked the media to promote education against the LGBTQI+ community, especially among children.
He said the media must not keep mute but use their platforms to discourage people from participating in such activities.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he posited that he was hopeful the anti-LGBT law would finally bury such activities.
The anti-LGBT bill
Parliament has proposed a bill that would punish displays of same-sex affection and advocacy for LGBTQ rights with up to ten years in prison.
The legislation, titled “The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021”, seeks to ensure up to a 10-year jail term for LGBTQI people.
The Bill was first laid in Parliament last month.
The Bill, among others, seeks to strengthen and augment existing legislation on the country’s penal code, which criminalizes consensual “unnatural carnal knowledge” with people over the age of 16 years under section 104 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) as amended by Act 646 of 2003.
The Bill was to Parliament’s Committee for Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for consideration.
The sponsors of the Bill include Mr Samuel George Nartey, MP for Ningo-Prampram, Mrs Della Sowah, MP for Kpando, Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra, MP for Ho West, and Mr Alhassan Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North.
The rest are Ms Rita Odorley Sowah, MP for La Dadekotopon, Rev John Nti Fordjour, MP for Assin-South, Mrs Helen Adjoa- Ntoso, MP for Karachi West and Mr Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi.
