September 8, 2021

The Kumasi Magistrate Court presided over by His Worship Fred Obikyere has granted bail of Ghc200,000 each with two sureties ( to be justified) to the two treaders who were caught for allegedly trading in contaminated frozen chicken.

The suspects Hajarah Fuseini, 30, mother of 5 and Francis Kojo, a father of 2, were arrested by Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly city guards for allegedly trading in contaminated frozen chicken.

They appeared before KMA Magistrate Court and pleaded not guilty hence the case has been adjourned to the 24th September 2021 for them to reappear.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) confiscated unwholesome cartons of frozen chicken parts at Mbrom, close to Racecourse Market within the metropolis.

The operation was carried out by the KMA task force last week Friday.

The female suspect was allegedly transporting the 15 cartons, which were suspected to be rotten to Adankwame and Asuofia for commercial purposes when she was arrested.

After the arrest of the second suspect, they further led the CID to the cold store where officers confiscated some additional rotten chicken parts.

The suspects told the police the unwholesome cartons of chicken were bought at half of their original price.

Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Enock Nkansah speaking after the proceedings on Wednesday, cautioned cold stores to desist from selling rotten products to the public.

He disclosed that the KMA is currently embarking on an inspection exercise to cold stores in the metropolis and ensure that the owners were not engaging in the sale of unwholesome products.

The lawyer for the suspects’ Bismark Nsiah Aboagye, explained that the two were charged with the sale of unwholesome chicken, which is an environmental hazard and against public safety.

He said his clients pleaded not guilty, and it was for the prosecutors to determine that his clients were guilty.

Also, the court has ordered the cartons of unwholesome chicken to be destroyed because there are not good for public safety.

He commended the court for considering public safety in granting that the 135 tonnes of the rotten chicken were destroyed.
