The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is currently in Guinea, in his capacity as Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority, as part of efforts to maintain order in the country following the coup.
He is there together with the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, to hold talks with the military leadership in Guinea, led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, largely on the fate of President Alpha Conde, amongst others.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the delegation are in Guinea to personally convey the decisions of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the interim leader.
Guinea, together with Mali, has been under the bloc’s sanctions as a result of a military takeover.
The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its unreserved condemnation of the coup of 5 September 2021 in Guinea.
It has also reaffirmed its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of President Alpha Conde.
ECOWAS also reminded members of the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) that they are individually and collectively responsible for the physical safety of President Alpha Conde.
After its deliberations, ECOWAS upheld the suspension of Guinea from all ECOWAS governing bodies until the restoration of constitutional order.
Guinea was also ordered to ensure the conduct of presidential and legislative elections within six (6) months in order to restore constitutional rule in the Republic of Guinea.
ECOWAS further imposed sanctions, in accordance with extant ECOWAS Protocols, of travel bans on the members of the CNRD and their family members and of freeze of their financial assets.
ECOWAS is to call on the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations, and other multilateral and bilateral partners to support the implementation of these sanctions.
It will also ensure that no member of the CNRD is allowed to contest in the presidential election; ECOWAS to accompany Guinea in the swift resolution of the crisis and in the preparations for the elections.
