The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Mr. Steve Gyeremeh Atuahene, has disclosed that the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS infection among key populations such as female sex workers and men sleeping with men is higher than the national prevalence rate.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he disclosed that the prevalence rate among sex workers is 4.6% as compared to the national rate of 1.6%.
He said the prevalence rate of sex workers is higher than that of the nation and that is worrying, he added.
On men having sex with men, he said the figure is 18.1% and that study was conducted in 2017 but their prevalence rate was still high.
He added that it is not only Ghana because, across the globe, men who sleep with men are also at higher risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
In Ghana, the rate of infection is among young men between 18-35 years.
“Our young men must be advised and refrain from such acts. The rate of infections among this key population is high and we must be worried aid address or,” he added.
