The Ghana Health Service has issued a statement to commemorate the United Nations International Day for Older Persons 2021 saying digitization of society has become inevitable and a very significant aspect of social interaction.
This year’s celebration is under the theme Digital Equity For All Ages”.
According to the statement, a lot of business transactions, academic and professional pursuits in most countries have migrated onto the digital space.
This the Ghana Health Service said creates inequities for various generational groups as they often require a major transformation of a person’s norms, values to stay abreast with ever-increasing fast-paced digital space.
The statement said this year’s celebration highlights among, other things, the need to bring awareness of the importance of digital inclusion of older persons while tackling stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination associated with digitization taking into account socio-cultural norms and the right to autonomy.
The GHS commended older persons and promised to ensure that they live healthy ageing and fruitful lives in Ghana.
The 2021 theme “Digital Equity for All Ages” affirms the need for access and meaningful participation in the digital world by older persons.
Objectives of #UNIDOP2021:
- To bring awareness of the importance of digital inclusion of older persons, while tackling stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination associated with digitalization, taking into account sociocultural norms and the right to autonomy.
- To highlight policies to leverage digital technologies for full achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
- To address public and private interests, in the areas of availability, connectivity, design, affordability, capacity building, infrastructure, and innovation.
- To explore the role of policies and legal frameworks to ensure privacy and safety of older persons in the digital world.
- To highlight the need for a legally binding instrument on the rights of older persons and an intersectional person-centered human rights approach for a society for all ages.
