The Assemblymember for Yamfo in the Brong Ahafo Region Mr. Yaw James has bemoaned the rise in drug abuse cases in the area.
The assembly member believes if the situation is not checked, it could affect the development of the area.
He indicated that the situation is becoming a huge societal burden in the area.
Mr. Yaw James said he feared this could result in mental health problems among the youth.
He is therefore calling for support from the assembly, youth authority, traditional authorities, and religious bodies as a matter of urgency to start education on drug abuse as the situation may get worse if the right thing is not done.
Some of the young people who also spoke on the matter were bitter about how alcoholism, drug peddling amongst the youth is taking them out of school.
They also asserted that the issue is a threat to the development of the area.
