The founder and leader of Kingdom Foundation Gospel Network, Apostle Lawrence Kwaw Sam, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to arrest foreigners begging for money on our streets.
In his view, the activities of street beggars, especially, foreigners are a threat to national security, thus our security agencies must act.
Apostle Lawrence Sam said he knows the IGP is working hard to reduce criminal activities happening in the country, but if he doesn’t take care, these foreigners who are begging will contribute to the growing rate of crime in Ghana.
”It’s either you send them back to their various countries or arrest them. They must be out of the street, he added.
In April this year, the Accra Police Command indicated its readiness to rid the streets of Accra of all child beggars.
The former Director of Operations of the Command, ACP Kwesi Ofori, now the Acting Director-General of the Police PR Department, noted that this would be done through a series of operations in the capital.
The Police were expected to hit areas like Madina, Osu, Ridge, Achimota and Lapaz, where child beggars from neighbouring countries are rampant.
“At the moment, you might have seen a lot of children from other West African countries on our streets. There are contractors who bring [them to Ghana] and place the children at vantage points and supervise them to beg. The Accra Regional Police Command will be looking into that,” ACP Ofori said.
“The street is littered with children. Sooner or later, we will be descending on the contractors who go to neighbouring countries to bring the children, collect the money and in the end benefit.”
