The Member of Parliament for South Dayi Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor has described as unconstitutional the directive from the Roads and Highways Ministry for the immediate implementation of the scrapping of the road tolls.
The legislator said the Minister does not have the power to issue such a directive when parliament was yet to debate the matter and approve the budget.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has issued a statement announcing that the scrapping of the road tolls took effect today, Thursday, November 18, 2021.
It said the directive affects all tolls nationwide.
The Police MTTD department has been deployed to the areas to maintain security at the toll locations.
But the NDC MP has described the directive as unconstitutional.
He opined that the government must first repeal the the Road Tolls Act before the directive can take effect.
“A Budget is merely a proposal until approved by Parliament. The Minister has no authority to direct that Road Tolls are abolished effective immediately. The Road Tolls Act, 1973, NRCD 153 & Act 570, 1999 would’ve to be repealed. Doesn’t Govt know how to repeal existing enactments,” he tweeted.
