The Ministry of Roads and Highways has clarified reasons why a directive was issued for the cessation of the collection of road tolls barely 24 hours after the presentation of the 2022 budget statement.
The Ministry said it was forced to issue the directive because there was confusion created after the minister had read the budget.
It said some drivers had the view that the cessation was to take effect right after the budget had been presented.
According to the statement, there were fisticuffs recorded which resulted in the “damage to lives and property”.
It added that the Ministry was aware the scrapping of the road tolls was to take effect after the budget had been approved.
But the confusion that characterized the budget presentation forced them to issue the directive.
