The National Cocoa Farmers Association NACOFA, has disclosed that their members would boycott this year’s national farmers’ Day celebration.
National President for the Association Mr. Anane Boateng said the government has not treated them well and does not consult them on issues affecting them.
He told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that although by law COCOBOD is expected to establish a welfare scheme for cocoa farmers, it delayed in establishing the welfare scheme.
And when they took steps to establish the welfare scheme, they have decided to do it on a pilot basis.
He explained the Association is not in support of the piloting because it is unconstitutional.
Mr. Boateng added that as beneficiaries, they should have been consulted on the welfare scheme but the government failed to do that.
He lamented that the government does not address their concerns and challenges but rather imposes on them their policies and programmes.
He alleged that COCOBOD has cheated cocoa farmers for far too long and they will no longer entertain that.
On the issue of scholarship meant for cocoa farmers, he said out of the 100 slots, only two farmers are selected with the remaining 98 going to the wards of non-farmers.
