The Chamber of Parliament is still empty with no presence of Members of Parliament from both sides of the House.
The House was expected to resume sitting today, Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 10: 00 am but as of 1:00 pm, the House was empty.
Reporting from the House, Rainbow Radio’s Philomina Kuntu Blankson said the MPs were holding separate meetings.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, she indicated the Minority and Majority causes are holding meetings in separate conference rooms.
She also disclosed that the MP for Dome Kwabenya, lawyer Adwoa Safo is the only MP who is absent with reason from sitting today.
On Friday, November 26, Parliament rejected the 2022 Budget after the Majority had staged a walkout during proceedings.
They staged a walkout after alleging ‘bias’ and ‘disrespect’ on the part of the Speaker, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.
The Majority subsequently described the Minority’s decision as ‘unconstitutional’.
But the Speaker on Monday, November 29, 2021, said the budget was rejected with 138 MPs present with one from the side of the Majority.
A brief statement he issued said;
“138 Honourable Members were Present!
Please let it be known that there were more than 137 MPs on the Floor when I put the question for the approval or rejection of the Economic Policy and Financial Statement of the government for the 2022 financial year often referred to as the Budget for 2022. After the rejection of the request by the Minister of Finance to be given more time to consult the expanded leadership of Parliament, one member of the Majority Caucus came to sit on the last row of the seats on the Majority side by the side-door facing the Speaker’s lobby. That took the number of attendants at that moment to 138. So when the question was put by me to the Plenary, the Hon. Gentleman remained silent.
I am asking Ghanaians to please disregard the survival antics by the ever loquacious Leader of the Majority Group in today’s hung Parliament. The budget was lawfully rejected!”
