The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has insisted that the E-Levy proposed by the government must be scrapped.
In an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Evans Otumfuo the General Secretary of the Association made mentioned that the government in the budget did not make any intervention about the challenges confronting them.
He lamented that mobile money merchants and agents are facing serious challenges including an increasing rate of robbery and death.
He explained that the government has no moral right to introduce a ‘momo levy’ when in the budget they failed to consider issues affecting momo agents.
The Association had planned to embark on a strike on Thursday, December 23, 2021, but had to call it off.
Evans Otumfuo disclosed that their cry eventually reached the government and his authorities, and a meeting was held with the communication minister addressing why they should call off their strike action.
He told the host that the government further explained to the association that the E- levy is not to harm them, but the association insisted that the E- levy should be eliminated at all cost.
He said the levy would collapse our business, and we have appealed to the government to scrap it.
”We want it scrapped. The momo levy will collapse mobile money,” he stressed.
He revealed that so far there are hundred and three thousand people registered as mobile money vendors and the whole population of mobile money agents are three hundred and fifty thousand.
He said it has not been easy convincing their members to call off the strike because they had wanted to send a clear message to the government that they were against the levy.
