Traders at CBD back on pavements, now selling in the street

January 14, 2022

Despite efforts by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey to clear off traders who had illegally occupied the pavements at the central business district (CBD), the traders are back.

They have resumed their activities and even gone beyond the pavements and are now trading in the streets meant for vehicular movements.

Reporting from the scene, Rainbow Radio’s Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi indicated that the activities of the traders were a threat to themselves, motorists, and drivers.

Reporting on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said the situation has worsened the traffic situation at the CBD.

He said should a car veer off the street, several persons would be crushed to death.

He also revealed that the plants that were planted at the CBD to beautify the area have all been destroyed.

He added that not even the presence of the. Police could scare the traders from moving away from the streets and the pavements.

Some of the traders he noted insulted him for filing his report on grounds that he wants them to lose their source of livelihood.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey, last year set his ‘Make Accra Work’ plan into action by storming the central business district (CBD) to clear off traders who had illegally occupied the pavements.

The initiative was led by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), with support from the security agencies.

It was to get rid of structures on the shoulders of roads, clear traders who obstruct pedestrian movement off the pavements, and allow for the free flow of vehicular traffic.

However, “the traders are back and have taken over the pavements and the main street once again. They are selling all manner of items, including clothes, shoes, bags, cosmetics, assorted food items, and beverages, sanitary products, among others,” Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi reported.
