The Member of Parliament for New Adubiase Mr. Adams Abdul Salam has bemoaned what he has described as high accommodation fees in public universities
In a statement made on the floor of Parliament yesterday, Thursday, January 27, 2022, he stated that the cost of accommodation on campus is too high for average parents.
The MP said the average residential fees ranged between Gh¢2,500 to Gh¢12,000 for an academic year which makes it difficult for students from poor families to enroll.
He has also admonished the government to improve facilities in our schools to help in resolving the recent accommodation crisis.
“Mr. Speaker as enrollment keeps increasing in public universities, the only logical thing for the government is to provide adequate facilities to accommodate the growing population”.
He has therefore called on the government to put proper measures in place to curtail the rise in illegal selling of bed spaces in various public universities.
The MP shared his experience on how it took him over six hours at the University of Ghana just to look for hostel facilities for one of his constituents.
Contributing to the statement the Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum stated that the high accommodation fees in public universities have been there for several years but the Ministry of Education is putting proper measures in place by building more hostel facilities to resolve the crisis.
