A 59-year-old prison officer Chief Officer Francis Dzaka Mawunyo, has been shot dead by armed robbers on the Asiakwa-Apedwa stretch on the Kumasi-Accra Highway.
The officer was allegedly shot in the face at close range moments after he had refused to surrender a bag in his possession.
Rainbowradiponline.com has gathered that the bag contained ¢340.
The suspected robbers were said to have been angered by the refusal if the officer to hand over his bag to them.
A member of the gun-wielding three-person robbery gang allegedly shot him for defying their order.
He was reportedly shot in the left eye, killing him instantly.
The Kibi Divisional Police have revealed they received a distress call about the robbery incident.
The robbers according to details available blocked, stopped and robbed over 20 vehicles at about 2:30 am on Thursday at a spot between Brimso and Enyinasi.
A statement from the Police said “On the spot, investigations disclosed that three armed men suspected to be of Fulani extraction stopped the vehicles and robbed the passengers of their properties including cash and mobile phones.”
According to the Police, the deceased, was onboard a 46-seater Hyundai bus with registration number AP 260-22.
He was travelling from the Kumasi-Accra when the robbers stopped the vehicle and robbed it
“It was further disclosed that the robbers demanded the decease to surrender his bag, but he resisted; as a result, one of the robbers armed with pump-action gun fired at him at close range by the left eye of the deceased head, killing him instantly.
“The robbers subsequently collected the bag of the deceased,” it said.
The Police said when a search was conducted on the deceased, ¢340 and a prison ID card bearing his name, Dzaka Francis Mawunyo.
