Court orders UTAG to call off strike

February 15, 2022

The Labour Division of the Accra High Court has granted an interlocutory injunction against the strike action undertaken by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

The National Labour Commission (NLC) filled an appeal for an interlocutory injunction to prevent UTAG from embarking on the strike.

UTAG has been on strike since January 10, 2022, in demand for better conditions of service.

The NLC dragged UTAG to court after attempts to have UTAG call off its strike failed.

It has been almost a month since UTAG declared their strike action.

The court had asked the UTAG and the NLC to settle their issues out of court but that has failed to materialized.

In court on Tuesday, February 15, the NLC’s legal team appealed to the court for an interlocutory injunction against the action by UTAG.

They told the court to grant their request before the hearing of its substantive case seeking enforcement of its order to UTAG to call off its industrial action.

Lewd counsel for UTAG, Kwasi Keli-Delataa objected to the motion.

He asked the court to deal with the substantive matter before it.

But in his ruling, His Lordship Rockson Aboadwe said the negotiations between both parties would not yield the needed results if the strike persists and thus granted the injunction.

Proceedings have thus been adjourned to February 22, 2022, at 1:30pm.
