The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has urged the government to swiftly evacuate Ghanaian students studying in Ukraine.
It is his argument that the government ought to evacuate the studnts and other Ghanaians to prevent any loss of life.
He was speaking on the floor of the House on Thursday, February 24, 2022.
He stated that “We should ensure the swift evacuation of Ghanaian students in Ukraine. This we must do to assure the students and their parents that they are Ghanaians and that they deserve our support. This is a matter of urgent public importance. I am indulging you to look at the matter because the Minister of Finance needs to make monies readily available to the Foreign Minister. The situation in Ukraine is very worrying, with imminent war.”
Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin on his part said the evacuation will come at a cost to the state hence the need for the Minority to support the E-Levy.
He said this is no longer a matter of NDC or NPP but the lives of Ghanaians study its wee at stake.
He believes when the E-Levy is passed, it will provide the government with the needed resources to evacuate Ghanaians in Ukraine.
Earlier, the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) asked the government to evacuate students.
“As conflicts escalate within the regions, governments of countries across the world are prioritizing the evacuation of their citizens across the area to forestall harm on their citizens. Some students have currently fled the region, showing growing insecurity and fear amongst students. Some of these students including the Executives of the NUGS chapter in Ukraine have touched down and have reached out to the National Secretariat of NUGS advising that urgent steps be taken to ensure the safety of their colleagues still in the regions.”
