The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the government is gravely worried over the safety and security of Ghanaian students in Ukraine following the invasion by Russia.
The Ministry has therefore asked Ghanaians in Ukraine to seek shelter in their homes or in government places of shelter.
In a tweet, the MFA said ”The Government of Ghana is gravely concerned about the security and safety of our over 1000 students and other Ghanaians in Ukraine and has asked them to shelter in place in their homes or in government places of shelter as we engage the authorities, our relevant diplomatic missions and our honorary consul on further measures.”
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has appealed to the government to evacuate Ghanaian students in Ukraine and send them back when the issues are resolved.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has officially cut diplomatic ties with Russia following its invasion of Ukrainian territory.
President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed this while addressing a press conference.
According to him, he would also issue weapons to everyone who wants them.
Ukrainian state air traffic services have closed the country’s airspace.
It suspended all flights at 02:45 Kyiv time (00.45 GMT) “due to the high risk of aviation safety for civil aviation”.
“The provision of air traffic services to civilian users of the airspace of Ukraine is suspended.”
The suspension of flights to and from Ukraine for at least the next 14 days.
