Some NPP MPs would’ve voted against E-Levy if Minority had not staged their walkout-Ras Mubarak

March 30, 2022

A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has accused the leadership of the Minority of failing to use all existing strategies in parliamentary proceedings to prevent the passage of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) bill.

The former lawmaker says the strategy by the Minority in stagging a walkout was not only terrible but horrible.

He opined that if the Minority had stayed throughout the proceedings, and allowed for all the processes to be exhausted, some of the members on the side of the Majority would have voted against the E-Levy.

He said there are some NPP MPs against the levy and the Minority failed to use all available opportunities to prevent the levy from being passed.

The Minority had no excuse to galvanise its members into the Chamber to vote on the passage of the levy particularly when the Majority managed to bring in a seriously ill Ahanta West MP, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, to participate in the passage of the levy, he told Kwabena Agyapong, host on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.

The Minority had accused the Majority Caucus of smuggling into the Order Paper, the consideration of the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy).

According to the Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, E-levy was not listed in Parliament’s business statement for this week.

He questioned why the Majority will pull such a surprise on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators.

But Ras Mubarak noted that the leadership of the House would have had a hint of the business of the day and so that was not an excuse.

He said the passage of the levy is insensitive to the aspirations of Ghanaians and ridiculous and will affect all aspects of the economic life of Ghanaians.

On the issue of the decision by the Minority to challenge the passage at the Supreme Court, he described it as naive.

He said the court has in recent times delivered ridiculous rulings hence it makes the Minority’s decision naive.
