Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams has told of the need for Ghana to position itself in the changes in global warming.
Speaking at the 1st edition of Ghana Economic Outlook Summit organized by the Institute of Certified Chartered Economists (ICCE) and CLK ADD, the Deputy Minister said there was the need to reduce greenhouse energy emissions as they contribute some 80% to the canker.
Dr. Amin Adams was speaking on behalf of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (the energy minister) in a keynote address when he reminded us that it took the world over seventy-five years to tune from coal to oil and gas economy.
Meanwhile, this generation is given thirty-five years to move from oil and gas to renewable energy, he added.
In any case, Ghana will not rush, but, consider workable systematic moves in this transition to help achieve the target. 75% of global carbon emission comes from the western world.
Ghana thus contributes less than a percentage of the remaining 25%. It, therefore, comes as a worry to be under pressure to move to renewable energy.
Worryingly, Shell and BP energies have shut down their biggest refineries in South Africa. With Shell, it has done so in Singapore as well.
A move, he said goes a long way in disadvantaging our economy, especially the energy sector. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) happens to be the directly affected entity whilst the heat of this situation is felt by many others.
Ghana is therefore keen on the steps needed in the said transitions for a greater benefit.
Dr. Amin Adams commended the organizers of the Ghana Economic Outlook Summit simply because Ghana’s foreign donors are yet to fulfill their promises since 2019.
The event which was held at the Africa Trade House (AfCFTA Secretariat) in Accra was on the theme climate financing: positioning Ghana’s economy in the era of energy transition.
