The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service D.O1 Timothy Osafo Affum has rated the performance of the service in combating fire in Ghana as A+.
Appearing on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said he did not rate their performance A+ because he speaks for the service, but the challenges and difficulties confronting them and the input they give the public is exceptional.
Despite the challenges confronting us, the firefighters in Ghana are risking their lives to help combat fire outbreaks in the country, he posited.
D.O 1 Timothy Osafo Affum rubbish assertions that firemen move to fire scenes without water in their fire fighting vehicles.
He said one of the major challenges confronting them is how poorly the country was designed.
He said there are some locations without hydrants, and in areas where there are hydrants, accessing it is difficult and in some cases without water flowing through them.
He asked Ghanaians to appreciate their work and support them in combating fire outbreaks in Ghana.
He further asked the public not to interfere with the work of the service since it affects the quality of their work.
He was speaking in commemoration of the International Fire Fighters DAY marked globally.
Firefighters Day was created in 1999 after 5 firefighters died tragically during a wildfire in Australia when the direction of the wind changed suddenly and engulfed them in flames.
It is celebrated on May 4th because that is Saint Florian’s day, and Saint Florian, who was said to be one of the first commanding firefighters of an actual Roman battalion and saved many lives, is the patron saint of firefighters.
