A private legal practitioner lawyer Ebenezer Ahiator has said that the leak of the purported will of late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, which generated public outrage is not entirely wrong.
According to the lawyer, the will is currently a case of litigation in the court of law, hence any Ghanaian citizen could apply for a copy from the court registry.
The lawyer, speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, explained that although the will is a document that is not discussed in the public space, the moment it is tendered in court as a piece of evidence, it becomes a public document.
”The issue of Sir John is different because his will is a subject of litigation in court. The will was tendered in as a piece of evidence in court. The moment that was done, it became a public document.
However, people must cautiously tread while discussing the issue. The case is still in court, and the discussion surrounding the will could be in contempt of court. It could prejudice the matter,” he warned.
The properties listed in the leaked will document have also triggered concerns about how the former politician acquired all his wealth.
Sir John, known in private life as Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, died in July 2020 after Covid-19 related health complications.
He was for many years the General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) before being appointed as the CEO of the Forestry Commission.
Sir John held that position until his death.
