The Member of Parliament for Builsa South Dr. Clement Apaak has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo accusing him of deceiving Ghanaians.
He said although President Akufo-Addo promised to use private funds for the construction of the national cathedral, he is using public funds.
According to him, the President has conned Ghanaians and must therefore apologise.
He wondered why the President make it look as if he was using private funds for the cathedral but had ended up using state funds.
According to him, documents from the Office of the President confirmed that in 2021 alone, President Akufo-Addo authorized GHS32million of taxpayer funds to be paid to Sir David Adjaye & Associates Ltd for consultancy services on his National Cathedral project.
Also, the government has planned to allocate an additional GHS57million towards the project.
However, the number of monies allocated so far was done at the blind side of parliament.
All these were carried out on the blind side of Parliament.
“NADAA said,”I made a pledge to God, that, if I become the President after two unsuccessful attempts in the 2016 Presidential Elections, I will build a Cathedral to the glory of God” He is using our funds, not private funds as promised. He conned Ghanaians, now he is conning God!”
He opined that decision by the President to allocate the money to the national cathedral is insensitive to the plight of ordinary Ghanaians in the face of current economic difficulties.
The National Cathedral project was proposed by the government in March 2017 as a physical embodiment of national unity, harmony, and spirituality.
The $350-million inter-denominational cathedral will have an auditorium capable of seating 5,000 people, as well as chapels, and a baptistery.
