National Chairman of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Mr. Alex Williams, has revealed that the government was yet to reassign or pay compensation to persons who were previously employed to man the various toll booths but had to stop after t5he collection of tolls was scrapped.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said they have written to the Roads and Highways where their members would be reassigned.
However, that has not been done, and they were yet to receive any response from the Ministry.
He explained that their members are currently in anticipation of where they would be reassigned.
The challenge he added was that some of their members were working directly under the government whereas about 300 others were also working under a private firm contracted by the government.
”Since January, they have not been given any salary or any benefit. They are unable to go to the hospital because they lack the financial support to pay their medical bills. Others have children in school.”
The private firm contracted he revealed further have threatened to lay their members off if they do not hear anything from the government.
According to him, some of their members have threatened to commit suicide because they are going through serious and unbearable financial difficulties.
In May this year, the Ministry of Roads and Highways stated that it was in the process of reassigning all the toll collectors who were rendered jobless after it decided to close all toll booths across the country.
The Ministry announced that no definite date could be given for when the reassignment will be done.
Some former toll booth attendants in Accra massed up at the Ministry of Roads and Highways on Thursday, May 12, 2022, to demand the payment of their salaries, which have been in arrears, and reassignment.
