The Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Mr. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi has rubbished claims that he is deliberately delaying the processes leading to the passage of the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill currently before his committee.
The Committee chair said members are seriously working on the LGBTQI+ Bill without any delays as perceived by some members of the House including the Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak.
He was also responding directly to comments made by Ho West MP, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzeah, who claimed that the committee is not working seriously on the Bill to get it passed.
”We (Committee) have never rested. Especially when they refer to the chairman of the committee as delaying the bill, Mr. Speaker, I would want the Hous to know that I am a senior member of this House and I am competent enough. I am a senior member at the bar, having passed out in 1995. Mr. Speaker, having practised and having gone through the law, this is a bill that we have to go through the processes and take the time so that we will pass a law that will withstand the test of time. We just cannot rush through this.”
He also told the House members had planned on travelling to have some experience but they were unable to do so.
He encouraged the members to be circumspect in their comments on the matter.
He said members of the public are interested in the issue and the committee will leave no stone unturned in passing a bill that will stand the test of time.
“I would want to draw the House’s attention that there are several bills before the committee. We had one in-camera meeting last week, and we have invited the sponsors of this bill for these meetings.”
“Honourable Bedzrah was at these meetings, so it was surprising that the same person who was aware of what the committee is doing will say that the committee is doing nothing about the bill. I want to set the records straight that the committee is on course, so far as bills are concerned.”
