The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has stated emphatically that there will be no extension for the sim card re-registration exercise.
Responding to questions concerning the ongoing sim card re-registration exercise, she declared that the deadline for the registration will not be extended.
“Mr. Speaker as soon as the deadline was extended everybody went back and slept hoping that the time will be extended again. I stand before this august house to assure the entire country that no time will be extended”.
The registration exercise is scheduled to end 31st day of July 2022.
Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful , encouraged those who don’t have the Ghana Card to take steps to acquire it to enable them to register their sims as it’s the only approved document for the sim card re-registration.
She further explained that the exercise will reduce or eliminate fraudulent or criminal activities facilitated by mobile phones or sim enable devices.
It will help authorities ascertain the real number of valid and accurate sims on the mobile networks, and enable operators to build better demographics of their customer base and help them develop product and services to suit these groupings.
The National Communications Authority she added will have a more accurate and credible data base to regulate the industry better.
The exercise she was confident will enhance economic growth as more confidence is built in the telecommunication sector and people utilize secure devices to access mobile base digital solutions both private and public.
“It will minimize mobile money and other digital financial services fraud, it will promote cyber security, and support financial inclusion.
A credible and reliable sim register will also serve as a database giving comprehensive statics regarding the number of subscribers in Ghana, and also provide the resource for tracking cyber fraudsters and criminals, she concluded.
