Kofi Akpaloo, the 2020 presidential candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), says it is not government business to construct a national cathedral.
He believes the government should focus on the mobilisation of resources from individuals with the capacity to assist with donations.
He said the government must convince individuals both at home and abroad to support the project.
He explained that when the project is done and profits are generated, it should be shared among all those who contributed to having it constructed.
”If this approach was used, we would have generated the needed resources for the construction of the project. Our problem is that we are not contributing together to form capital to win everything for us. We are only interested in the easy way by allowing foreigners to do so.”
”The country is facing economic stress because of the way we do things. We are not prepared to change. If we don’t change, we will continue to suffer and face economic crisis.”
The government has explained that the National Cathedral is a historic project that provides a sacred space and infrastructure for the formal religious activities of the nation, like state funerals and presidential inaugural services.
The design for the Cathedral was unveiled by President Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2018.
The interdenominational Christian Cathedral, when completed, will have a 5,000 seating capacity with chapels, a baptistery, a music school, an art gallery and a Bible museum.
