UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has delivered his resignation address in an address outside No 10 Downing Street, where he announced his position as Tory leader but said he would continue to serve until the party chooses his successor.
The politician who has come under fire and asked to resign said until his replacement is found, the public’s interests will be served.
“Being prime minister is an education in itself – I’ve travelled to every part of UK and I’ve found so many people possessed of such boundless British originality and so willing to tackle old problems in new ways.
“Even if things can sometimes seem dark now, our future together is golden,” Johnson says.
However, a growing number of Tory MPs are saying he has to quit now.
The Labour party says Johnson cannot stay on as PM, or they will try to bring a no-confidence vote in Parliament.
Several appointees have resigned but Johnson has been appointing a new cabinet.
He has appointed Greg Clark as the new Levelling Up Secretary while Kit Malthouse as Chancellor for the Duchy of Lancaster.
Meanwhile, James Cleverly has been appointed the third education minister in three days, while Robert Buckland is the Welsh Secretary.
Moments after the address, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, “The PM has made the right decision.”
”The government under Boris’s leadership had many achievements – delivering Brexit, vaccines and backing Ukraine. We need calmness and unity now and to keep governing while a new leader is found.”
