Outgoing deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lawyer Obiri Boahen has noted that the circumstances that led Ghana to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), under the current government are far different from that of former President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5fm, he posited that the decision by this government to go to the IMF is based on the global crisis including the covid-19 pandemic.
He also indicated that the Russian-Ukraine war has also affected the economy hence the two scenarios cannot be compared.
He was speaking to Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi and Daniel Asuku.
He stated that the former president John Dramani Mahama mismanaged the economy and crippled the economy and for that reason had to seek a bailout.
“However, the current administration was hit by the covid-19 outbreak and when we were preparing to come out of it, the Russian-Ukraine war also hit us badly. Therefore it would be unfair to compare the two scenarios. One administration went to the IMF due to mismanagement. The other went to the IMF because of the crisis facing the world,” he added.
