A former deputy national organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, says the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to push for the Ghana card to be made the sole form of identification for the registration of voters’ ID card will disenfranchise people.
He stated that the electoral body must rescind that decision since several Ghanaians have not been able to acquire their Ghana card.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he posited that ”the move would disenfranchise people. It is not a prudent decision, and the EC should reconsider it”.
He said ”the failure of the National Identification Authority (NIA), to register Ghanaians coupled with the frustrations people go through, to register, should not be a barrier to preventing qualified voters, to voting in 2024.
He said the process in uusing the Ghana card as the sole form of identification, should not be rushed, and the EC should take its time.
On the suggestion that the Ghana card could be used as a voting card, he said Ghana has not gotten to that point yet, and the countries we compare ourselves to use the E-voting system which could allow voters to vote from any location.
However, in Ghana, we use the polling station system to vote, making it impossible for people to vote.
