Sarki Saddick Abubakar, Zongo chief of Ngleshie-laafa, has laughed off claims that he is operating an illegal station in the area.
Doubling as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Mallam Junction, branch chairman, the chief said he went through the necessary approvals from the mother union to operate the station.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he indicated that persons who are accusing him of operating an illegal station are bitter and peddling lies.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that his operation “is legal because the GPRTU approved of our work, they gave us documentation and so anyone who will make claims that we are illegal is not serious.
We are operating under strict adherence to the rules and regulations of GPRTU. Passengers who come here attest to the fact that we are operating with professionalism. When you come here and leave anything in any of our cars, we will keep it for you. As we speak, we have several items including mobile phones and bags which belong to passengers who are yet to come for them.”
He further disclosed that other drivers who are not happy about their operations are doing everything possible to tarnish their image and create bad and negative publicity for them.
He said the branch has adopted several welfare mechanisms to assist drivers and that has influenced other unions including PROTOA to hint at plans to join them.
He revealed attempts have been made to attack him.
He said a toilet facility erected at the station was recently destroyed by those who were against the activities of the station.
He noted that the individuals who destroyed the toilet facility came in the evening to engage in the criminal act.
He added that the Assembly denied instructing the demolition since it was not built on the waterway or without authorisation.
“Therefore, it confirmed that the drivers who are against our operation are the ones who are causing the trouble but we have reported the matter to the Police and expect that the offenders are arrested and prosecuted,” he concluded.
