Prez must explain why 2.3 B was approved for free SHS this year while your wards are going hungry at school- MP

August 17, 2022

Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, has asked the Ghanaian public, particularly parents, to demand answers from President Akufo-Addo on why our various secondary schools are suffering from food shortages.

According to the legislator, there should be no food shortages in our secondary schools because parliament has approved 2.3 billion to fund SHS through 2022.

EC unable to pay electricity bills, outstanding bills for logistics, administrative releases delayed -Senior Staff

He was responding to a warning from the Greater Accra regional branch of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools that students would be sent home if funds for perishables were not released.

CHASS has also complained about unpaid arrears and has requested that funds be released to pay them.

In response to CHASS’s concerns, Dr. Appeal stated that it made no sense for the schools to be deprived of food when parliament had already approved funding for the policy’s implementation this year.

GT Accra CHASS, like Northern Region CHASS, says should government fail to release funds for perishables, and pay arrears for same, SHS1 students will have to remain home, and SHS2 students currently on campus will be sent home.

The question I hope parents, old boys and girls, and Ghanaians in general, will ask NADAA is why an amount of 2.3B he asked for to fund SHS for 2022 was approved by Parliament, yet the Secondary schools still face these challenges?

See SOS letter by Northern Region CHASS below. Information available to me indicates that the situation is same across board. Similar SOS letters from other local chapters of CHASS are bound to pop up.

In Solidarity!
