Lawyer Kofi Bekai, a private legal practitioner, believes that former President John Dramani Mahama’s call for compensation for Appiatse explosion victims is a good but mute call.
The lawyer explained that the government is currently redeveloping the community as part of compensation, so the president’s call is not entirely appropriate.
”The government is currently building for the victims of the explosion. That is compensation simpliciter.”
“If the government embarked on a project that harmed the people, they would be compensated.” In this case, an explosion occurred, and the government is redeveloping the community. There is no need for further compensation. If this isn’t politics, I’m not sure what is.”
Lawyer Bekai was interviewed on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem.
He emphasized that the former President’s call was purely political in nature.
He also stated that the call could persuade people to file a class action lawsuit against the government.
He went on to say that affected victims could no longer sue the company involved in the case because the Ghanaian government sanctioned the company and ordered them to pay compensation for community redevelopment.
“This could lead to people filing a class action lawsuit against the government, which could cause confusion, especially if the court dismisses the case.” The compensation he sought is being paid for through redevelopment, and there will be no more compensation.”
