Residents in Akyem Wenchi, a mining community in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, are in tears, fear, and pain following the death of eight-year-old Akwasi.
Residents have since urged the police to act quickly because Akwasi’s death is not the only one that has occurred in the area.
The deceased’s mother wailed uncontrollably and demanded that the police apprehend those responsible for the murder.
Akyeam Wenchi Assemblyman Ntiamoah confirmed the incident and described it as concerning.
He told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the suspect who allegedly murdered the minor had been apprehended.
The suspect, he claims, is a known addict who abuses cocaine, wee, and other substances.
Aside from drug use, the suspect is a known thief who abuses and steals from others, he added.
The Assemblyman further disclosed that residents in the area attempted to lynch the suspect even at the Police station.
He revealed that the suspect allegedly clubbed the minor, and fled, but was later apprehended by an enraged mob, who handed him over to the police.
Meanwhile, he has urged residents to remain calm and allow the police to conduct an investigation.
“I’d like to encourage residents to remain calm. Taking the law into your own hands and attacking alleged criminals is not recommended. Allow the police to investigate and bring the perpetrator to justice.”
