Rightify Ghana, a human rights organization based in Ghana with a primary focus on advocacy, community empowerment, and media monitoring of human rights, has spoken out against Francisca Oteng-Mensah’s appointment as Deputy Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
In a series of tweets, the organization stated that the nominee is anti-human rights and does not qualify for the position.
Rightify Ghana believes Francisca Oteng-Mensah has compromised herself by playing a role in getting a far-reaching anti-LGBTQ bill into parliament.
The tweets read: ”the Deputy Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister-designate, Francisca Oteng-Mensah is an anti-LGBTQI+ campaigner and was among the initial list of sponsors of Ghana’s far-reaching anti-LGBTQ bill.
However, she is among MPs that withdrew from sponsoring the Bill. RightifyGhana believes Francisca Oteng-Mensah has compromised herself by playing a role in getting a far-reaching anti-LGBTQ bill into parliament.
We have not seen her speak out against violence against persons presumed to be LGBT, including queer women who were raped or defiled.”
In their view, ”the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is one of the most important in Ghana if the State is serious about the #SDGs.
It cannot claim to be inclusive, respect diversity and promote equality when they nominate Francisca Oteng-Mensah for that key state institution.”
”The tweet added As a human rights organisation, we are committed to reminding the State of it’s international human rights obligations as well as the mandates of it’s institutions.
For Ghana to meet it’s #SDG targets we need to do so through policies and actions to #LeaveNoOneBehind.”
