Selfish & greedy judges who purchased vehicles at lower prices should return them- Peace Watch Ghana

August 31, 2022

Founder and Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, has waded into the Auditor-report, General’s which named several people for illegal vehicle purchases.

The issue, according to Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, is one of greed, selfishness, and disgrace to the judiciary.

The Auditor General has cited 19 former and current judges of Ghana’s superior courts for acquiring state vehicles, which is a violation of Regulation 158 of the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019. (L.I. 2378).

According to the report, 19 vehicles were “auctioned by the Service for GH1,023,507.96 without the Minister of Finance’s approval.”

According to the regulation, the principal spending officer of a covered entity must obtain written approval from the Minister before transferring, exchanging, selling, donating, contributing in kind, trusting, or disposing of any vehicle.

It has been recommended to the judges that the vehicle auction be cancelled.

“In the absence of Ministerial approval, we recommended that the auction be cancelled and the vehicles recovered.”

In response to the report, the peace ambassador expressed her outrage that people who uphold the law and are charged with presiding over criminal cases and can imprison criminals have been cited for these illegal acts.

“I am appalled by the report. This scandal has implicated respected learned justices of our courts. This is not only unfortunate but also a disgrace and an attack on the judiciary’s integrity.

These things are quite troubling when you look at them. However, due to our dire economic situation, purchasing a car has become prohibitively expensive. As a result, people are resorting to dubious means to obtain vehicles at lower prices.”

“We must deal with the situation.” It has been going on for a long time, and we need to deal with it once and for all.”

If these vehicles had been sold at the appropriate prices, the funds could have been used to provide free SHS or national insurance. But look at how avaricious and self-centred these judges are. How long do they have left? You are about to retire, but you let greed and selfishness lead you. We’ll plead with them to return the vehicles.”
