Concern Youth of Atwima Mponua in the Ashanti Region has urged chiefs and residents to assist the district chief executive, Hon. Isaac Marfo, in fighting illegal mining activities in the district in order to save their land and water bodies.
Mr. Philip Kwabena Nyame, a youth leader, stated that both the chiefs who own the lands must agree that “never again should we mine in our river bodies.”
This call comes as Aisha Huang, the Chinese lady who was implicated in galamsey activities but was deported three years ago, has resurfaced in Ghana and is being re-arrested for the same offence.
In an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he stated that galamsey is a threat to the area as well as the nation as a whole, thus the need for chiefs and residents to support the galamsey fight.
He stated that illegal mining activities had jeopardized the people’s livelihood. The DCE is taking action to put a stop to these activities, but he needs our help. As a result, we are appealing to the chiefs to support him. If the chiefs, people, and assembly have not seen what the DCE is doing, we want them to wake up and support him.”
“Galamsey is taking place in our communities, and the DCE is doing everything he can. He will fail if we do not support him. We will continue to encourage our stakeholders to join us in the fight. We will no longer allow a few greedy individuals to destroy our water bodies for financial gain. The DCE is fighting galamsey with his own resources, so we cannot sit back and watch him suffer in vain; we must support him.”
