A 41-year-old woman drowned with three children in a pit dug in the Keta Lagoon near Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality.
On Saturday, Madam Yawa Apenu was allegedly fishing with her children, Bridget Amewu, 14, and Daddy Amewu, 10, as well as a third child, Sitsofe Ahiawor, 8, who lived with the family.
Mr Atitso Amewu, the widower, who was said to be on the expedition, however, managed to swim to safety, the MCE Maxwell Lugudor narrated.
The MCE described the incident as “very sad” on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline.
According to him, he had to cancel an official engagement because of the incident.
He revealed that the assembly member from the area had informed him.
He confirmed that Seven Seas Limited dug the lagoon with an unfinished dyke on its concessions in the area.
He stated that the company has been directed the installation of erect signposts at the lagoon to prevent another incident.
He explained that the company had been working in the dug lagoon but had to stop due to heavy rains.
The MCE told host Kwabena Agyapong that this was not the first incident and that a middle-aged man recently died in the lagoon.
It was established that the man who had gone swimming in the lagoon was drunk.
“We have asked them to erect signs at the lagoon. They awarded a contract to a company but the heavy rains halted the work.”
When asked if the company could be blamed for the incident, he said until a probe has been conducted, he would not be in the position to make that conclusion.
He assured the public that they will intensify education on tye dangers associated with the lagoon in collaboration with the company.
