The Economic Fighters League has responded to comments made by Asokwa MP K.T Hammond that the old folks would not allow young people to run the country because they lacked the necessary skills.
In an interview with journalists earlier this week, the legislator expressed his displeasure with President Akufo-booing, Addo’s arguing that it was wrong for the youth to disrespect the president and, by extension, elders in society, especially for political reasons.
He urged the youth to remain humble at all times and to show proper respect to those who are older.
K. T Hammond added that the platform from which the president spoke was not political enough to warrant the reaction he received from some event attendees.
Reacting to the issue, the EFL stated that the comments do not come as a surprise because the Ghanaian constitution, they argued, explicitly prohibits the youth from actively participating in the governance process beyond the self-serving ballot harvesting that the establishment performs every four years, despite the fact that the youth constitute 60% of the Ghanaian population.
He explained that the country is in a serious crisis, and nothing appears to be working in education, health, and the economy, among other areas.
”Everything in this country is failing, from education to health, agriculture, the economy; our education systems are failing and youth unemployment is out of control, yet people like Mr Hammond, who has for over twenty years been MP of one of the poorest constituencies in Ghana, speak and act with impunity and arrogance, calling their corruption governance and the youth, lazy and stupid. In 2019 this same Mr Hammond told us Parliamentarians “won’t sit under trees” in defense of a new parliamentary chamber, when many youth in his home constituency are schooling under trees.”
EFL is therefore asking the youth of Ghana to join them in fighting what they have described as oppression so a new system is built.
”The unfortunate tragedy in Ghana and much of Africa is that individuals of retirement age have hijacked the reins of government, disenfranchising the youth of their role in governance and leaving them sorely underrepresented. Able bodied and minded youth are wasting away, uneducated, unsupported and unemployed while ‘elders’ slumber and steal at the wheels of governance, only to blame the disenfranchised youth for their own deliberate incompetence.
The Economic Fighters League calls on Ghana youth to rise. Arise! Join us in dismantling this oppressive system that marginalises us. We must demand and BUILD a new system that promotes inclusive governance and equal opportunities for all. We must reclaim our nation for the sake of all its people.”
