The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Birim Central, Madam Victory Adu, has disclosed that the MMDCEs who met with the President on Wednesday have pledged to deal ruthlessly with the galamsey menace.
She said several of our water bodies had been destroyed, and if we fail to deal with the menace, we will soon import water to drink.
“Our water bodies have been destroyed,” she said on Nyankonton Mu Nsemon Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm. Farms such as cocoa and other crops have been destroyed. We must confront the problem without fear or favour.
Galamsey perpetrators must be dealt with harshly. As MMDCEs, we have pledged to assist the presidency in its fight against malaria. We are prepared and hope for Ghanaians’ support. We must stop playing partisan politics with Galamsey and address the problem.”
She lamented that the Birim River is now poisonous and unfit for human consumption, adding that you will die if you drink the river’s water.
She stressed that ”we cannot fight galamsey all alone. We need the support of Ghanaians. We must preserve our water bodies and farmlands. We cannot allow the greed of a few people to engage in illegal mining and threaten our existence”.
