The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai ‘Odike,’ has stated that the constitution of the Republic of Ghana has given the president a great deal of power.
He believes that in its current form, the constitution allows the president to appoint thieves, family and friends, and cronies to steal from the state’s scarce resources.
He claimed that “the constitution allows the president to appoint party members, friends, family, cronies, and others who can assist him or her in colluding and stealing from the state. The president wields far too much power, which is undesirable. It is to blame for the majority of the issues”.
“The Constitution has caused people and our leaders to be selfish, greedy, and self-centred, and to amass wealth for themselves. Individualism is what we see; there is no nationalism or patriotism. Political meddling is the norm. We need to build systems that work and prevent political interference in our institutions. To avoid this, we must revise the constitution.
We need to review it so that our local government takes a bottom-up approach and Ghanaians see themselves as part of the country’s management. Ghanaians must see themselves as part of the government.”
He added that the review would be carried out by his party if they were allowed to govern the country.
Our state institutions, which he established, must be led by experts with the necessary skills and knowledge, not by party members who lack such knowledge.
He emphasized that the country requires a national policy that political parties in power must implement.
He made the remarks in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.
