A private legal practitioner lawyer Kofi Bekai has averred there was nothing wrong with lawyer Freddie Blay representing some foreign nationals standing trial for illegal mining activities.
A section of the Ghanaian public is not happy that lawyer Blay is representing foreigners.
But lawyer Bekai is of the view that it does not matter who represents the suspects, and that will have a material effect on the case pending before the court.
He said the court is no respecter of persons, and everybody is entitled to legal representation in court.
”It doesn’t matter who represents the suspects. The judge presiding over the matter is not interested in whether the lawyer is an NPP chairman. It is immaterial to the judge. What is material to the judge is that the lawyer representing is qualified.”
The lawyer further asserted that the evidence brought before the court is the most important.
”Until Aisha Huang and the others are pronounced guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction, they are not guilty and entitled to a lawyer of their choice.”
”The judge will not rule because of the lawyer. It is the merit of the case. The prosecutor should prove beyond reasonable doubt that these nationals are guilty. It does not matter if Freddie Blay represents them.”
