A former Director-General of CID of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Bright Oduro [rtd], has admonished the Police administration to deal with unprofessional conduct on the part of some officers.
When asked about the recent policing approach to motorcycle use, he stated, “that is a very good initiative.” The mere presence of police deters crime. However, if there are several officers in town and they extort money from people, that will incite people,” he says.
To deal with criminal activities, he stated that professional police must be friendly and work in collaboration with the public.
While praising the Police for the community policy system and the introduction of motorbike patrol, he stated that if officers use the opportunity to extort money and intimidate Ghanaians, they will lose trust in the service and the patrol’s purpose will be defeated.
He said while the police are patrolling, professionally, they should be friendly and interact with Ghanaians and encourage them to volunteer information that could help deal with crime.
“However, when they are in town harassing drivers and extorting money from them…some officers become agitated when they see DV plates. These actions make the public despise the police. The officers’ superiors should brief them on what they should do while patrolling in town. They should not bother motorists.”
