The government has allegedly destroyed the ‘galamsey’ site structures in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
This is in response to a directive from the Lands Ministry to halt all operations by mining firm Akonta Mining Limited.
This website has gathered that the burning of the structures took place on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
According to additional information, the mining site was set ablaze after heavy equipment belonging to the mining firm owned by the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Wontumi, was evacuated.
The Minerals Commission of Ghana had stated that Akonta Mining Limited does not have a mining lease, mineral right, or permit to conduct mining operations in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve or any other reserve.
According to the Commission, the mineral leases granted to Akonta Mining Limited are outside the Tano Nimri Reserve, and documents claiming otherwise should be treated with contempt.
