Supreme Court nominee Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu has declared that he remains qualified to be nominated to the apex court.
The nominee responded to a question asked by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu over whether he thought it was fair for him to be appointed as a judge to the apex court from the High Court.
The Minority Leader expressed worry about why the nominee was elevated and fast-tracked to the apex court just at the beginning of his career at the High Court.
Justice Gaewu, in his response, averred that he remains qualified as espoused in Article 128 (4) of the 1992 Constitution.
He said it is a constitutional mandate granted to the president to appoint qualified persons to the Supreme Court, and he falls within the criteria.
He explained that ”a person shall not be qualified for the appointment as an SC judge unless he is of high moral character, and proven integrity and is of not less than 15 years standing as a lawyer”.
He said he has practised as a lawyer for 22 years, hence he qualifies to be appointed as a judge to the SC, when he appeared before the vetting committee on Thursday, October 20, 2022.
