We don’t import the sea so why should salt move from Ghc150 to Ghc950- Association

October 27, 2022

The Cosmetic Manufacturers Association of Ghana has expressed concern about the high cost of salt, a key commodity in their operations.

According to the Association, salt, which was previously a “neglected cost” in their operations, is now more expensive than rice.

Jones Appiah, the Association’s National General Secretary, complained bitterly that the price of 75KG of salt gas had risen from Ghc150 in July this year to Ghc950.

“As I speak, a 75KG bag of salt costs Ghc150 in July. The price has risen to GHc950. The cost has risen by more than Ghc700. This is both outrageous and troubling. We have no idea what is going on. If salt is now more expensive than rice, where do we stand as a country? ”

He stated on Nyankonron Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Gm that without salt, industry operators would be unable to manufacture their products and their businesses would fail.

“We are appealing to those who have a voice and the ability to intervene. Cosmetics Manufacturers’ activities have employed a large number of people. We cannot let these job opportunities be lost due to salt.”

He added that salt should be something that should be expensive since the sea from where the salt is extracted has moved anywhere.

”Without salt, our jobs would be at stake. The sea is here with us. It has not moved anywhere. We don’t import the sea and so why should salt be expensive? We cannot allow the salt to be expensive. It would be unfortunate for that to happen.”
